In 1985, further to its transformation into an holding and the entry of the institution of Region Lombardy as a new shareholder, the subsidiary Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio was founded to run rail operations. In 2001, Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio created, the “Cargo division” in order to exploit the opportunities offered by rail freight liberalisation in Italy and produced the first private freight rail line between Melzo (Milan) and Zeebrugge (Belgium). In 2003, the division was changed into a company, Ferrovie Nord Cargo Ltd. Ferrovie Nord Cargo changed its corporate name into NORDCARGO on April 29, 2006, further to the adoption of a new corporate identity regarding FNM group companies. On September 19, 2008, the rail freight operator DB Schenker Rail Italia, a subsidiary of DB Schenker group, has signed an agreement with FERROVIENORD: this operation will consolidate the international vocation of NORDCARGO.
